Air Conditioning Installation Contractors

Air conditioning installation is undoubtedly the best way to keep your home cool and comfortable during warm months. Central air conditioning installation, in particular, will not only help keep your home at an enjoyable temperature, it may even add to your home's value and help you save money on energy bills. If you're thinking of having an air conditioning contractor install an ac system in your home or office, there are a few things you must first understand before the air conditioning installers begin.

There are three main types of air conditioning systems: central air conditioning, room air conditioners (a.k.a. window units), and ductless air conditioning. Continue reading to learn the tips and tricks to these three types of air conditioning installation.

Central Air Conditioning Installation
Proper central air conditioning installation is vital to the overall function and effectiveness of the unit. An improperly installed central ac system will not perform efficiently and most likely require repair. Central air conditioning uses air ducts to circulate cooled air throughout the home. In homes with existing ducts, central air conditioning installation is a relatively quick job. For homes without existing air ducts or ducts needing extensive repair, however, central air conditioning installation will cost more time and money to complete.

As your air conditioning contractor installs your central air conditioning system, be sure he or she follows these simple guidelines:

  • If ducts need to be installed, position them within an air-conditioned space (i.e. not in the attic).
  • Install correctly-sized ducts for the respective home.
  • Thoroughly seal all air ducts and insulate any attic ducts.
  • Check to make sure there is a suitable number of supply and return registers to circulate and redistribute the air.
  • Position the thermostat as far from heat sources (i.e. windows) as possible.
  • Ensure the proper, manufacturer-specified air-flow rate.
  • Place the outdoor condensing unit in an open (unblocked) area, preferably in the shade.
  • Place the indoor evaporating unit in a clean, accessible area that is large enough for an air conditioning contractor to perform routine maintenance or possible future repairs.

Room Air Conditioner (a.k.a. Window Unit)
In general, room air conditioners do not require the help of a professional air conditioner installer; you or someone you know can properly install a unit. Following the simple installation guidelines below can help you reduce energy usage and save money with a room air conditioner.

  • Be sure the unit is level so that it can properly drain.
  • If possible, install the unit in a shady area, preferably on the home's northeast side.
  • Ensure that the unit's airflow is unblocked.
  • Set the fan speed on high to ensure maximum comfort. (Only set the fan to low speed on days with high humidity.)
  • Avoid placing sources of heat (e.g. lamp) near the room air conditioner's thermostat, as this head source will cause the unit to run longer than needed.

Ductless Air Conditioning Installation
Ductless air conditioners are typically used in homes that lack an existing air duct system, or instances where adding or repairing a home's ductwork is not feasible. Think of ductless air conditioning systems as a compromise between central air conditioning and room air conditioners. Like window units, ductless ac systems do not use air ducts to circulate air, and tend to only cool the room in which they're installed (although ductless air conditioners can be set up to cool up to four rooms). Like a central air conditioning system, ductless air conditioners have an indoor unit linked to an outdoor unit.

Ductless air conditioning installation is perhaps the most difficult type of home air conditioning installation, and should only be attempted by a contractor with prior experience and extensive knowledge. If you are considering a ductless air conditioning system, be sure that your air conditioning installer knows exactly what he or she is doing before they begin.

General Tips for Air Conditioning Installation
The newer your air conditioning system, the more efficient and effective it will be. However, there are a few ways to ensure an efficiently air conditioned home, even with an older ac system.

First, have an air conditioning installer discuss with you the proper size and power needed to cool your home. Air conditioning cooling power is measure in Btu's (British thermal units) per hour. A general rule of thumb is that you need ~12,000 Btu's for every 1,000 feet of properly-insulated space (for a poorly-insulated space, the number shrinks to about 500 feet). You'll also need to speak with your air conditioning contractor about the height of your ceilings. Homes with high or vaulted ceilings require a more-powerful air conditioning unit.

And finally, to ensure long-lasting air conditioning efficiency, ask an air conditioning contractor to examine your home's insulation and ductwork. A home that lacks the proper insulation R-value, or a home with poorly sealed or leaking air ducts, will experience significant air leakage, and, as a result, expensive energy bills. Air conditioning installation is an important step in the process, but it's not the only one: ensuring the proper size, power, location, insulation, and ductwork is equally important.
